This memoir is the result of seven years of living in a remote Aboriginal community in the far North of Australia.
It speaks of my adoption into the Gupapuyŋu tribe, life with Yolŋu on a remote island and my continuing journeys with Yoga and Healing.
Quote from Wäwa Jo Djembaŋu, 2004
“Tell them: We live our culture by singing and dancing, sitting in shade, not inside. Hunting weṯi (kangaroo), djanda (goanna), guya (fish), miyapunu (turtle), nyoka (crab), maypal (shellfish). We pass our tradition on to the djamarrkuḻi’ (children). Family sharing is important. Gurul (visiting) never ends, sharing rrupiya (money), ŋatha (food). That’s the Yolŋu way…”
Quote from Yapa Jessie Murarrgirarrgi, 2016
“You must tell this story because not many people come here... So you can let them know about us…”
This book is dedicated to the Yolŋu people of Arnhem Land and for the continued preservation of languages and culture for all Indigenous groups of our earth and future generations.
“Jacque Sullivan rated it 5 STARS
it was amazing
I highly recommend this brilliant read of a woman’s experience in a remote Indigenous community in the far Northern Territory of Australia. A unique opportunity to capture a glimpse of the world’s oldest living culture! A must-read for every Australian in particular; and the world at large. This book captures the wonderful essence of such a beautiful people, whose culture is so powerfully rich and deeply connected spiritually. A culture living in complete harmony with mother nature and its place in the universe. This is a culture we have so much to learn from. I’m deeply grateful for the read
Thank you Mary, captivating!”

I loved Saltwater Skin, it’s such an interesting and informative read and I truly didn’t want it to end. I was infused with a beautiful, calm ancient energy that transported me to feel and gain an understanding of the rhythm and flow of life of the Yolngu people, as described by Mary McCarthy, during her teaching years in Arnhem Land. Highly recommended.”
